These artworks, titled REFLECT, create reflective spaces where individuals can find a moment of connection. The work consists of three sculptures, each crafted from mirrors and adorned with words contributed by the community on the Isle of Bute.
These sculptures encourage active participation from the public, enabling people see themselves, and photograph themselves and others in new ways in the surfaces of the mirrors.
The island’s rich history as a beloved seaside destination inspired the face-in-the-hole boards. These playful elements encourage interaction and serve as a nod to the joyful, shared experiences that characterise our island's heritage. The incorporation of words from local people, including contributions from people going through the refugee process on Bute, adds a rich, communal narrative to each piece.
The largest of the pieces is a five sided chamber that has mirrors on all surfaces. The exterior is adorned with words from locals, and the interior, where an infinity room effect is created by the mirrors, has chalk pens attached to it, allowing visitors to write their interior thoughts and reflections onto its surface. In this way, the artwork evolves throughout the duration of its installation.
